Wills(mith) and Jazzy Chris
This past Tuesday night, I checked another item off of my things to do in Cape Town list - see a live jazz show. Cape Town, and South Africa more generally has a pretty vibrant jazz scene, and I've been wanting to go to a jazz club, so I was excited to see "The Crypt Jazz Evening" show up on the iX calendar on Allcal. Wills, one of my friends I've met here at iXperience, is musical (he plays 4 instruments and has seen Yo Yo Ma in concert several times) has been wanting to see a jazz show as well, so together we made our way to downtown Cape Town, got ourselves a table at the Crypt, ordered a few beers, and enjoyed the music.
When we first arrived, the house band was playing some low-key instrumental stuff, but over the course of the night 4 different groups took the stage. Their styles ranged from chill beats to loud, upbeat ragtime sounds, and included instrumental jam sessions as well as nice vocals. There was one American man named John (who vaguely resembled Santa Claus) who had brought his sax with him to South Africa and joined a few of the bands on stage to play with them.
It was nice to chat with Wills a little bit, while enjoying my Jack Black lager and listening to smooth jazz, and am definitely looking forward to doing it again either here or in Boston in a few months.
Bonus Story about Wills: On Sunday a group of us went down to the beach to throw the football and frisbee around and watch the sunset. It was a beautiful day, and there were a lot of people on the beach, and a lot of people with their dogs. Out of nowhere, two of these dogs, big golden retrivers, started barking and bolted into the water. We looked to where they were running, and sure enough saw a seal flopping around in the shallow water. Wills had been splashing around in the water, and still had his bathing suit on, so he heroically chased after the dogs to try to bring them back to shore. He got close a few times, but was untimately unsuccessful, but it was quite a scene to watch.

The dogs never actually made it to the seal, which made it back into the deeper ocean unscathed.
